In March 2022, here at Monday Press, we began receiving long emails from an anonymous account belonging to someone we barely knew. These letters were sent from deep underground—so deep that we weren’t even sure if it was safe to reply. They told an insider’s story of a world in the process of being erased: the anxiety, the fear, and the longing for something that was vanishing right before the author’s eyes. Over the course of a year, we received four letters and a series of photographs (taken by Wassily Bosch). The author of the letters is now in a safe place but prefers to remain anonymous.
The book describes the Russian noise underground in the first year of the war. It’s a devastating read, raw, excessive, hyper-existential, intimate, edge of the world, anti-war, written from the inside.
recenzje
“MOR moves at a nauseating pace. The protagonist drifts through the Russian underground scene, shuttling between Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Characters appear and disappear like half-formed ghosts – graffiti tags, bird calls, nicknames, drugs, lovers, misadventures. The narrative unfolds in a raw and episodic barrage of images, framing not only a chronicle of subcultural life but a glimpse of a Russia on the cusp of something approaching a kind of democratic or aesthetic opening.”
Xenia Benivolski / The Wire
“This is a tale of crazy happenings, bizarre and on-the-edge characters, fear, confusion, and a world that exists parallel to, but separate from, that of the mass Russian population, a counter culture that is paranoid and weak and ripe to be snuffed out, and scared stiff that it will be.”
Alan Rider / Outside Left
